WESTMINSTER, Md. – The McDaniel College baseball team overcame an early deficit to earn an 8-6 comeback win over Skidmore in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Preston Field.
Game two of the twin bill was called due to darkness after the Green Terror (1-3-1) tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, resulting in a 10-10 tie.
McDaniel 8, Skidmore 6 (Game 1)
Skidmore started strong in game one with three runs coming across the plate in the first two innings. McDaniel tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second after a sacrifice fly from freshman
Henry Novario sent home sophomore
DJ Stolba.
The Thoroughbreds took a three-run lead to lead off the third inning before the Green Terror tied the game again after an RBI double from graduate student
Joey Hubinger and a two-run single from sophomore
Shea McKenna.
McDaniel broke the tie in the fifth after an RBI single from Stolba, and the Green Terror added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from senior
Shane Daly.
Skidmore put two runners on base in the top of the ninth but junior
Conor Henderson closed the door to seal the 8-6 win in game one.
McKenna reached base safely five times in the game, finishing 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks. Stolba went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Hubinger also earned two hits and an RBI. McDaniel collected seven extra-base hits, three of which were triples.
Sophomore
Jake Young earned the win for the Green Terror in relief. Young pitched three innings and allowed only one hit, striking out five Skidmore batters. Henderson got the save after retiring the only batter he faced.
McDaniel 10, Skidmore 10 (Game 2)
Game two began as a pitcher's duel, as both teams combined for only one hit through the first two innings. Skidmore (0-1-1) opened up a 5-0 lead in the fourth after a fielding error allowed two runs to score. McDaniel got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead to 5-2 before the Thoroughbreds added an insurance run the fifth.
A three-run homer bumped the Skidmore lead to 9-4 in the sixth inning. The Green Terror rallied to tie the game with five runs between the sixth and eighth before the Thoroughbreds took the lead again on an RBI-single in the top of the ninth.
McDaniel tied the game in the bottom half but left three runners on base to end the inning before the game was called due to darkness.
Junior
Ben Davis led the way offensively with three hits in four at-bats, collecting three RBIs. McKenna followed up his strong performance in game one with an equally strong showing in game two, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and scoring three runs. Hubinger added two RBIs of his own and Daly added three hits in five plate appearances.
Freshman
Kurtis MacKenzie got the start in game two, striking out three and walking four in 2.2 innings of work. Freshman
Austin Sealing earned two strikeouts in relief while Henderson struck out two batters and allowed only one base hit.
The Green Terror continue a seven-game home stand when they host Stevenson in a midweek clash on Tuesday. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m. from Preston Field.
