Kearney’s Career Night Fuels Win over Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -  Junior David Kearney scored a career-high 30 points to lead the McDaniel College men's basketball team to a 62-57 road win over Washington College on Wednesday night.

Kearney is the first player to score 30 points in a game for the Green Terror (12-8, 2-6) since Mike Wallace scored 37 points at Lycoming on Nov. 13, 2021. He made 11-of-17 shot attempts and hit on all but one of his nine free throws. He also grabbed eight rebounds and forced four steals.

Graduate Student Chuck Contee scored 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting. Junior Kevin Connelly connected on two three-pointers, finishing with seven points for the game. Junior Matt Kearney scored six points in 16 minutes off the bench.

McDaniel opened the contest on a 10-2 run before the Shoremen (7-13, 2-6) stormed back to tie the game at 10-10. The final 11 minutes of the half saw the Green Terror maintain a slim lead until the final minute, when the Shoremen closed the half on an 8-1 run to take a 25-23 lead into the break.

Much like the start of the first half, McDaniel started strong in the second, opening the half on a 9-0 run. A Washington College layup with 12:06 to play cut the McDaniel lead to two, but the Green Terror pulled away with another quick burst. A 12-0 run gave the visitors a 16-point lead with 6:42 remaining, and McDaniel maintained a double-digit edge until the final minutes. Washington College scored the final six points of the game to give McDaniel a five-point road win in conference play.

Kearney scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half, making 8-of-10 shots from the floor. As a team, the Green Terror shot 65 percent in the second, compared to only 37 percent from the Shoremen. Two second half runs for McDaniel ultimately proved to be the difference, as the Green Terror outscored Washington College 39-32 in the half.

McDaniel wraps up a two-game road trip on Saturday against Haverford. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
