Baseball Drops Season Opener After Walk-Off Home Run

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - A walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning sealed a 6-5 loss for the McDaniel College baseball team in the season opener at Bridgewater on Saturday.

Junior Ben Davis led the Green Terror (0-1) at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore Ethan Haddock went 1-for-4 with an RBI while senior Shane Daly went 1-for-5 with a triple. Sophomore Shea McKenna, the reigning Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year, went 1-for-3 and drew a walk.

McDaniel got on the board early after a two-run first inning. Davis earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly and graduate student Joey Hubinger scored on a wild pitch. Davis homered in the top of the sixth to push McDaniel's lead to 3-0, but the Eagles (1-1) would rally late in the contest.

Another sac-fly from Haddock was followed by Davis's second home run of the day. With the Green Terror leading 5-1 in the seventh, Bridgewater scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 5-5.

The game remained tied into the ninth, when the Eagles hit a walk-off solo home run off senior Conor Henderson.

McDaniel had more base hits than Bridgewater and committed no errors but couldn't break the tie late. The Green Terror left eight runners on base and struck out 10 times, while the pitching staff collected six strikeouts and eight combined walks.

The Green Terror wrap up their opening series with Bridgewater tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is at 11 am followed by game two at 2 pm.
