Dominant First Half Secures Win Over Franklin & Marshall

WESTMINSTER, Md. – An 11-0 run towards the end of the second quarter propelled the McDaniel College women's basketball team to a 68-61 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday inside the Gill Center.

Junior Elaina Beckett led the Green Terror (13-6, 4-4) with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Senior Lil Overcash scored a season-high 17 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing four assists. Sophomore Teya McConnaha secured her third double-double of the season with 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore Caroline Barbalato scored seven points off the bench and had two assists.

The Diplomats (13-8, 4-6) jumped out to an early 6-4 lead with 6:36 to play in the first quarter before a Beckett three-pointer gave the lead to McDaniel at the 4:56 mark. Franklin & Marshall would tie the game at 10-10 but the Green Terror would snatch the lead back with a 5-0 run punctuated by a three-point play from Barbalato. McDaniel would end the first with a 17-13 lead, marking the 16th time in 19 games this season the team has outscored its opponents in the first quarter.

A layup from McConnaha with 3:19 left in the second quarter gave McDaniel a 28-21 lead, which would grow to an 18-point lead by halftime thanks to an 11-0 Green Terror run to close the half. McConnaha scored eight of the 11 points during the run, converting on a three-pointer and completing a three-point play after a made layup.

McDaniel grew the lead to 21 after a Beckett layup in transition at the start of the third quarter, but the Diplomats closed the gap with a quick 8-2 run. Franklin & Marshall would close the quarter with a buzzer-beater to trim the deficit to 13, 54-41. An Overcash layup at the 3:53 mark of the fourth quarter gave McDaniel a 17-point lead. The Diplomats would score the final eight points of the game but could not complete the late comeback.

McDaniel improved to 8-0 at home this season after another strong first half. The Green Terror led by 18 points at halftime and shot 45 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes. McDaniel hit seven three-pointers and controlled the boards, outrebounding the Diplomats 42-27.

The Green Terror hit the road on Wednesday for another Centennial Conference showdown against Washington College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
