WESTMINSTER, Md. - In a game that featured six ties and 14 lead changes, the McDaniel College women's basketball team fell for the first time this season, dropping its Centennial Conference opener to Dickinson Wednesday, 59-57 on Rebecca L. Martin Court.
The Green Terror (7-1, 0-1 CC), who are receiving votes in both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and D3hoops.com Top 25 polls, lost at home for the first time in the last eight games, since a 68-52 defeat to No. 13 Gettysburg on Feb. 19, 2025.
The best start to a season in school history came in 2014-15 when McDaniel began the season with nine consecutive wins en route to a 24-4 overall record.
Senior
Elaina Beckett finished with 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists while junior
Raegan Lenz totaled her first double double of the season and third of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also added four assists and three blocks.
Sophomore
Lauren Cavoli had 11 points, her third game in double figures out of the last four, one point shy of her season high set in back-to-back games against Notre Dame of Maryland and Eastern.
The Green Terror trailed by eight, 47-39, with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter, but scored nine of the first 12 points to start the fourth and regain the lead, 53-52 on layup by Lenz with 3:53 left.
The game was tied for the final time at 55-55 with 59 seconds to play before a layup by Clare Cronley and a free throw by Lizzie McGrath gave the visitors a three-point advantage with 30 seconds remaining.
Lenz followed with another layup eight seconds later, but McDaniel missed a shot to retake the lead with six seconds remaining and the Red Devils (4-3, 1-0 CC) added 1-of-2 free throws with one second remaining to provide the final margin.
Both teams shot below 40 percent in the second half with Dickinson going 2-of-9 in the fourth quarter as the Green Terror made their run. However, they made just 5-of-14 attempts in the fourth and finished the game just 12-of-21 for 57 percent on attempts from inside the charge circle.
McDaniel managed to score 38 points in the paint, but the Red Devils scored 19 points off turnovers and had 13 second chance points off 15 offensive rebounds as the Green Terror was out-rebounded for the first time this season, 39-33.
Conference play continues for McDaniel on Saturday as it heads to Ursinus for a 1 p.m. tip-off with the Bears.
