David Kearney and junior
Bruce Black each scored 25 points to lead the McDaniel College men's basketball team to an 80-76 road win over Cairn on Wednesday.
The Green Terror (6-2) never trailed and fought off a late rally in the second half by scoring the final four points over the last 1:08 of the game.
McDaniel opened the contest on a 14-0 run highlighted by three-pointers from sophomore
Ashenafi Stuart and junior
Ryan Shaffer.
A three from Kearney with 11:12 left in the first half gave the visitors their largest lead of the game at 17.
The Highlanders (9-3) battled back to cut the deficit to nine with just over six minutes left, and a layup with 1:51 on the clock closed the gap to six.
A three-pointer from sophomore
Cole Riley with 27 seconds remaining gave McDaniel an eight-point cushion heading into halftime, 42-34.
Another strong start to the second half grew the Green Terror lead to 10 with 15:19 to play, capped off by a Stuart three-pointer.
A Kearney layup with 5:35 left in the game made the score 74-60, but the Highlanders would respond with a 9-0 run, scoring 14 of the game's next 16 points and tying the score at 76-76 with 1:27 remaining.
Black gave McDaniel the lead on a layup moments later and Kearney sealed the win with a pair of late free throws with two seconds on the clock.
Kearney had 25 points on 11-of-12 shooting while adding eight rebounds and two steals. Black grabbed seven rebounds and made all seven of his free throw attempts.
Stuart scored 12 points and hit two three-pointers while Shaffer chipped in with five points and seven boards.
McDaniel made over 54 percent of its shots from the field, going 31-for-57. The visitors also made 13-of-15 attempts at the foul line.
Cairn held the rebounding edge, 34-29, and won the turnover battle, 12-10. However, the Highlanders were outscored 48-36 in the paint.
McDaniel takes a 10-day break for the holidays before traveling to Center Valley, Pa. to participate in the Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament hosted by DeSales. The Green Terror will battle Gwynedd Mercy in the opener on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 4 p.m.
