CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A three-pointer by sophomore
Ashenafi Stuart with 12 seconds remaining lifted the McDaniel College men's basketball team to a 61-60 victory over Gwynedd Mercy in the Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament hosted by DeSales on Sunday.
The Green Terror (7-2), who posted their third-straight victory with a win in their first-ever meeting against the Griffins, will face Baruch in Monday's championship game after the Bearcats defeated the host Bulldogs by one-point, 67-66.
The game featured three ties and eight lead changes, including four lead changes in the final 5:35.
McDaniel, who trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, used a 10-2 run to erase a seven-point deficit and take a 54-53 lead on a driving layup by senior
David Kearney with 5:35 remaining. It was the first lead for the Green Terror since the 14:44 mark of the first half.
The two teams would exchange leads over the next three possessions before a layup and three-pointer off a turnover gave Gwynedd Mercy (7-3) a four-point advantage, 60-56 with 3:41 left.
However, that would be the final basket of the game for the Griffins as they missed their final five shot attempts and the McDaniel defense forced two turnovers, including a shot clock violation.
A second chance tip-in by junior
Ryan Shaffer with 3:19 to play pulled the Green Terror within two, 60-58, before Stuart's game-winner of an assist from junior Mikey Ayala Jr with 12 seconds remaining.
Gwynedd Mercy had a chance at a game winner of their own, but Bruce Smith's pull up at the buzzer was off the mark.
Kearney led McDaniel with 19 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks while Stuart had 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Shaffer had nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Senior
Matt Kearney added eight points, four rebounds, and three steals while sophomore
Kaydin Ford tied his career high with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Green Terror will face Baruch in Monday's Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament championship game beginning at 6 p.m. It will also be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
