Shaffer Leads McDaniel to 71-65 Home Win Over Delaware Valley

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior Ryan Shaffer totaled his first career double double to lead the McDaniel College men's basketball team to a 71-65 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday inside the Gill Center.

The Green Terror (4-1) have started the season with four wins in their first five games for the second consecutive season. Last year, the team also started 4-1 which was its best start since the 2014-15 season as it posted wins in 10 of its first 11 games.

Shaffer totaled 25 points and 12 rebounds, both career highs, on 10-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.

Sophomore Ashen Stuart also had a career-high with 23 points as he posted the first 20-point games of his career as well. He had four three-pointers as both he and Shaffer played a total of 37 out of 40 minutes.

McDaniel rallied from an 11-point deficit with 13:02 remaining in the first half to take its first lead at 21-18 with 9:02 left following a three-pointer from Stuart.

The Aggies (3-2) built their lead back to six late in the first half before Stuart's third three-pointer of the half pulled the Green Terror within two at the half, 39-37.

Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first half with McDaniel hitting 13-of-25 attempts for 52.0 percent and Delaware Valley going 15-for-28 for 53.5 percent. The two teams combined for 12 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

The Aggies scored 15 of the first 23 points to start the second half and push its lead to nine with 13:41 to play, 54-45, but McDaniel responded with a 13-4 run to tie the game at 58-58 on a jumper by Shaffer with 5:03 remaining.

The Green Terror didn't stop there, scoring 11 of the next 15 points to take their largest lead of the game at seven, 69-62 with 16 seconds left.

After the visitors took their nine-point lead, McDaniel finished the game on a 26-9 run with 11 of those points coming from Shaffer who totaled 17 of his 25 points in the second half.

McDaniel scored 36 of its 71 points in the paint and 26 off of just 10 Delaware Valley turnovers. The Green Terror shot 47.3 percent from the floor, were a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line and held a 37-25 advantage in rebounds.

McDaniel held the Aggies to just 34.6 percent shooting in the second half while scoring 11 points off five turnovers.

Shaffer and Stuart combined for 48 points and 16 rebounds on 18-of-32 shooting while senior Matt Kearney added seven points and four rebounds. Senior David Kearney had six points and three rebounds.

The Green Terror return to action on Tuesday when they host Penn State Altoona for a 7 p.m., tip-off.
