Second Set Win Highlights 3-1 Road Loss to Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A 26-24 win in the second set highlighted a 3-1 loss for the McDaniel College volleyball team against conference rival Muhlenberg on Saturday.

A 24-24 tie was broken with back-to-back kills from junior Abigayle Bowley and sophomore Kaylee Comstock to give the Green Terror (9-14, 1-7) a two-point victory.

Both teams battled in a back-and-forth opening set, with the score tied at 14-14 with neither team having a larger lead that one to that point. The Mules (10-16, 2-6) broke the tie with a 7-0 run, and following a kill from Bowley and a service error, Muhlenberg scored four of the set's final five points to take the win, 25-17.

Set two started similarly as both teams traded points in the early goings. A 5-1 run gave the Mules a 20-17 lead late in the set, but McDaniel stayed within striking distance and scored three straight to cut the deficit to one. The Green Terror took a 24-23 lead after kills from Bowley and senior Kailey Young, but Muhlenberg tied the score on the next point. Bowley and Comstock notched two kills to pull out a dramatic 26-24 win for the visitors.

The Green Terror started hot in set three, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and eventually growing the lead to five, 13-8. The Mules responded with five straight points to tie the score, battling with McDaniel on the next several points to a 19-19 score. Three straight Muhlenberg scores were followed by three straight McDaniel scores, highlighted by consecutive service aces from sophomore Natalia Johnson. The Mules would then score the final three to win 25-22, taking the fourth set by that same score after breaking a 21-21 tie late.

First year Mariya Carson led the team with 12 kills on 40 attempts while Young finished second with 10. Comstock had 25 assists, 11 digs and six aces while the team combined for 20 block assists, tied for its highest total in a match this season.

McDaniel plays its final road match of the season on Wednesday against conference rival Dickinson at 7pm.
