Buttons Leads Volleyball in Loss at Conference Rival Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore Stephanie Buttons finished with a team-high 11 kills and nine digs to lead the McDaniel College volleyball team in a 3-0 loss at Swarthmore on Friday night.

Buttons finished one kill shy of her season-high set on Oct. 2 against St. Mary's (MD). The match was her fifth of the season with double-digit kills for the Green Terror (9-12, 1-5).

The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, with McDaniel holding an early 10-8 lead following a Buttons kill. The Garnet (15-8, 6-1) soon rallied with a 7-2 run to regain momentum. Following another Buttons kill to cut the Green Terror deficit to two, Swarthmore closed the door with a 5-1 run late to win the opener, 25-19.

The Garnet jumped out to an early lead in set two, opening on a 9-3 run before kills from juniors Abigayle Bowley and Abigail May brought the Green Terror back. Three straight errors drew McDaniel to within five midway through the set, but the Garnet finished strong to open a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-17 triumph.

Four straight early points highlighted the start of set three, with kills from Buttons and senior Kailey Young leading the way. The Green Terror held a four-point cushion early on before Swarthmore slowly crawled back into the contest. A 6-1 run gave the Garnet a slim 17-16 lead, a lead that would soon become 23-18. Back-to-back kills from first year Kaitlyn Saidat could not save McDaniel late as the visitors fell 25-22 to close the match.

Buttons led the attack with 11 kills on 31 attempts while Young finished with nine and first year Mariya Carsoncontributing with seven. Sophomore Kaylee Comstock had 17 assists and nine digs while senior Samantha Fadel led the defensive effort with a team-best 11 digs.

The Green Terror return to the Gill Center on Wednesday to face conference rival Gettysburg at 7 pm.
