WESTMINSTER, Md. – After a St. Mary's (MD) comeback tied the match at two sets apiece, the McDaniel College volleyball team held off the rally to win set five and the match 3-2 at the Gill Center on Thursday.
The Green Terror (8-6) improve to 7-4 all-time over the Seahawks (6-9), winning five of the last six in the series against coach
Jenn Feldmann's alma mater.
McDaniel opened the first set on an 11-2 run, maintaining an eight-point cushion before St. Mary's scored seven of the next eight points to draw within two. A service error gave the Green Terror a slim 25-22 win, fending off the late comeback attempt. After trailing 15-14 midway through the second set, back-to-back kills from senior
Kailey Young kickstarted a McDaniel run where the Green Terror scored nine of the next ten, cruising to a 25-17 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set three appeared to be another Green Terror win but the Seahawks worked back into the contest after trailing early. Facing a 20-15 deficit, St. Mary's went on a 9-1 run to storm back and take the lead, 24-21. McDaniel countered by scoring three straight to tie the set again, thanks to kills from Young and sophomore
Stephanie Buttons and an ace from senior
Samantha Fadel. After forcing another 25-25 tie, the Seahawks scored the final two points to complete a 27-25 comeback victory. St. Mary's continued its momentum into set four, opening on a 5-0 run and leading wire-to-wire for a 25-18 win, holding off a Green Terror comeback to tie the match at two sets apiece.
The decisive fifth set was a back-and-forth affair early, with the Green Terror benefiting from two consecutive errors and another Young kill to lead 9-5. After three straight Seahawk points cut the lead to one, McDaniel answered with three straight points of its own to lead 12-8. A St. Mary's ace made the score 12-10, but junior
Abigayle Bowley collected a kill and first year
Kaitlyn Saidat combined for a set-sealing block with junior
Abigail May to win 15-10 and claim the match, 3-2.
Young and Buttons combined for 25 kills in the win, while Bowley had nine and first year
Mariya Carson had eight. Sophomore
Kaylee Comstock had a team-high 25 assists while Fadel led the way with 12 digs and a team-best four aces. Bowley and Carson had seven and six block assists respectively.
The Green Terror will play their final road non-conference match of the season on Saturday when they visit Penn State Harrisburg at 3 pm.
