First Quarter Goals Lead Swarthmore Past Field Hockey

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Two goals scored in the first quarter paved the way for a 4-0 home win for Swarthmore over the McDaniel College field hockey team on Saturday.

The Green Terror (5-9, 1-5) saved two additional shots in the opening frame, but a goal with just over two minutes remaining in the period gave the Garnet (8-7, 5-2) a 2-0 lead at the end of one.

Swarthmore then tacked on a third goal just 22 seconds into the second quarter, but junior Lora Scarangello saved the next attempt eight minutes later.

Sophomore Charley Noah started the second half with her first shot of the contest, taking her second shot less than two minutes later and having both result in saves for the Garnet. Following a penalty corner, Swarthmore scored its fourth goal of the game just past the 33-minute mark. Scarangello tallied two more saves to close the third quarter.

First year Grace Legacy notched her first career defensive save with five minutes to play, denying the Garnet to keep the final margin at four.

Noah led the way offensively with two shots on goal while first year Caydence Stone took an early shot in the first quarter. Scarangello played all 60 minutes in the cage and recorded seven saves on 17 shots faced. The Green Terror held the edge in saves with eight, but Swarthmore totaled eight penalty corners and 12 shots on goal, including six shots in the third quarter alone.

McDaniel returns to Gill Stadium on Wednesday for a midweek showdown with conference rival Gettysburg. Match time is 6 pm from Westminster.
