Late Runs Spark Haverford to 3-0 Home Win Over McDaniel

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford used late runs in all three sets to secure a 3-0 sweep over the McDaniel College volleyball team on Saturday afternoon.

The Green Terror (8-9, 0-2) took an early 9-7 lead in set one after a combined block from junior Abigayle Bowley and sophomore Cassy Poteet, but the Fords (11-5, 2-1) soon surged ahead 15-11. After a kill from first year Kaitlyn Saidatcut the deficit to one, Haverford scored seven of the next eight points to pull ahead by seven, 23-16. McDaniel then scored four straight on three kills from first year Mariya Carson, but the Fords claimed the set by scoring the final two points to win 25-20.

McDaniel again held an early two-point lead to start the second set but a 5-0 run gave the Fords an 11-8 lead. A kill from Bowley kept the Green Terror within three, but Haverford then scored seven unanswered points to extend the lead to 10. McDaniel mounted a late rally, scoring six of the next eight but Haverford answered and won again, 25-18.

The Green Terror started the third set strong, leading 5-4 in the early goings. After a quick Haverford run, McDaniel drew even with the Fords at 11-11 until the home team scored five straight to take the lead. The lead eventually grew to eight, which would stay the final margin as the Fords fended off the Green Terror to win 25-17 and secure the sweep.

Carson led McDaniel with 12 kills on 28 attempts while sophomore Stephanie Buttons collected eight kills. Sophomore Kaylee Comstock had 20 assists and senior Samantha Fadel had nine digs. Saidat and senior Kailey Young combined for five blocks in the loss.

The Green Terror begin a two-match homestand on Wednesday when they host conference rival Washington College. The match will begin at 7 pm.
