GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A 34-point second half highlighted a 69-53 road loss for the McDaniel College men's basketball team against Gettysburg on Wednesday night.
The Green Terror (11-7, 1-5) shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and made 5-of-6 three-point attempts, outscoring the Bullets (14-5, 5-1) by nine in the final 20 minutes.
Junior
Jonas Sujeta led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, making 4-of-7 shots from long distance. Junior
David Kearney scored 15 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead the team. Junior
Kevin Connelly scored five points and had three rebounds and two assists. Graduate student
Chuck Contee scored four points to bring his career total to 983 points, needing only 17 more to join the 1,000-point club.
The Bullets began the contest on a 20-4 run in the first seven minutes. The Green Terror cut the deficit to 12 after a layup from Contee with 11:13 left but couldn't get closer than that for the remainder of the half. Gettysburg closed the half on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 44-19 heading into halftime.
Sujeta began the scoring in the second half with two quick baskets in the first minute. Sujeta and Connelly hit a trio of three-pointers to pull within 19 at the 12:19 mark. Free throws from Kearney with 7:25 to play cut the deficit to 15, and a layup from senior
Russell Dandridge made the score 64-51 with 4:19 remaining in the game. Both teams embarked on a scoring drought for the final 2:25; the only point scored on a free throw from freshman
William Carr with 19 seconds left.
A slow start hurt the Green Terror as McDaniel shot only 29.2 percent from the field in the first half. The Bullets benefited from Green Terror turnovers, scoring 19 points off of 14 McDaniel giveaways. Gettysburg controlled the boards with 34 and blocked seven McDaniel shots.
The Green Terror return home to the Gill Center on Saturday to face Franklin & Marshall on Mental Health Awareness Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 pm.
