Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 25 McDaniel Remains Unbeaten With Draw Versus Seahawks

SALISBURY, Md. - McDaniel College women's soccer junior Abby Witzel scored her first goal of the season, but St. Mary's (Md.) tied the game with less than six minutes remaining as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie Saturday in the Salisbury University Classic.

The 25th-ranked Green Terror (2-0-1) remained unbeaten in three games this season and unbeaten in five of six the last six meetings against the Seahawks dating back to 2012.

In the first meeting between the two teams since 2019, McDaniel held a 17-3 advantage in shots, including a 14-1 margin in the first half. The team also totaled seven corner kicks, all of which came in the first 45 minutes.

However, the Seahawks' Kyleigh Bland stopped all three shots on goal and the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.

Just two minutes into the second half, the Green Terror were awarded a penalty kick. The shot by senior Jessica Weinoldt was saved by Bland, but Witzel was there to pick up the rebound and slot it into the back of the net in the 48th minute to give McDaniel a 1-0 lead.

The goal was the fourth of Witzel's career in the defender's 42-game career.

After the first half saw 15 shots and seven corner kicks, the second half had just five shots and one corner kick. The Green Terror held their one-goal lead until the 85th minute when Rylee Cessna scored off an assist from Keira O'Neail.

Neither team registered another shot over the final 5:29 and the game finished in a draw.

Bland totaled four saves while St. Mary's scored on its only shot on goal.

On Sunday, McDaniel concludes faces the host Sea Gulls in the final game of the Salisbury University Classic. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
