WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College volleyball team totaled 41 kills, 10 service aces and nine blocks as it picked up its first win of the season over in-state rival Hood Tuesday night at the Gill Center, 27-25, 25-20, 25-19.
The Green Terror (1-1) have won nine of their last 10 matches against the Blazers, including all five at home. Eight of those nine wins have come in straight sets.
Juniors
Kenzie Mitchell and
Kailey Young led the offense with nine kills apiece while senior
Allyson Burgee added seven to go along with a .364 hitting percentage. Graduate student
Nia Roberts and sophomore
Abigayle Bowley each had four kills while Roberts totaled five blocks and Bowley had six block assists.
The match featured 19 ties and six lead changes, including nine ties and two lead changes in a tightly-contested first set. McDaniel scored five of the first seven points, including three on kills by Young before the Blazers responded with a 10-4 run to take a 12-9 lead.
Led by two kills from Mitchell and two blocks each from Roberts and Bowley, the Green Terror would fight their way back and retake the lead, 19-18. However, Hood (0-3) would tie the match three more times with the last coming at 25-25 before back-to-back kills by Roberts and Burgee gave the home team the necessary two points to win the set.
Roberts totaled three kills and three blocks in the opening set.
McDaniel jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set before the Blazers tied it for the second time at 11-11. The visitors would take a quick 12-11 advantage before a kill by Mitchell and three-straight service aces by freshman
Kaylee Comstock put the Green Terror back in front to stay en route to a five-point victory.Â
Mitchell totaled five of her nine kills in the second set and did not have an error in 10 attempts.
Much the like the first set, the third set was a back-and-forth affair that saw seven ties and two lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points before McDaniel tied the set for the final time, 17-17. Following a timeout by Hood, the Green Terror scored eight of the final 10 points, including on service aces by Comstock and two on kills by Young.
Eight players had at least one kill for McDaniel while Comstock totaled eight assists and two service aces in the third set.
Comstock finished with 16 assists, five service aces and three digs while sophomore
Hannah Waters also had 16 assists. Senior
Katherine Taveras led the defense with 11 digs.
The Green Terror travel to Winchester, Va. this weekend for the Shenandoah Invitational hosted by Shenandoah University. McDaniel will play three matches beginning on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Penn State Altoona.
