Mevo Game-Winner Lifts McDaniel to Fourth-Straight Win

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Sophomore Mike Mevo scored his first career goal to lift the McDaniel College men's soccer team to a 1-0 Centennial Conference victory over Washington College Saturday at the Soccer Complex.

The Green Terror (5-2-1, 2-0 CC) posted their fourth win in-a-row and fourth-straight shutout. The team has not allowed a goal since the 81st minute against Eastern Mennonite, extending its shutout streak to 369 minutes.

McDaniel's four-game win streak is its longest since it started the 2022 season with five consecutive wins. The last time the team started conference play with back-to-back wins was 2009.

The win also snapped a four-game losing streak for the Green Terror against the Shoremen (3-2-4, 0-1-1 CC) dating back to 2017. The last three meetings between the two teams have been decided by just one goal.

Washington controlled the tempo early, out-shooting McDaniel 4-2 in the first half while holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes.

However, the Green Terror registered the first five shots of the second half with Mevo scoring on the fifth to break the scoreless tie in the 50th minute. After a shot by senior Brandon Morse was saved by Cole White, Mevo was there to clean up the rebound and slot it to the bottom left corner to put the home team in front.

From there, McDaniel relied on defense to post a one-goal victory against the 2023 national semifinalists. Sophomore Tate Roth finished with three saves.

Following its victory against the eighth-ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches Region V rankings, McDaniel will continue a tough three-game stretch on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays are currently ranked fourth in Region V.

The Green Terror will then travel to No. 23 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
