BALTIMORE, Md. - Johns Hopkins scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 14th minute to lead the Blue Jays to a 1-0 victory over the McDaniel College men's soccer team Wednesday at Homewood Field.
The Green Terror (5-3-1, 2-1 CC) suffered their loss in the last five games and had their shutout streak snapped at 382 minutes.
Hopkins, ranked fourth in the United Soccer Coaches Region V rankings, scored on the game's first shot when Ian Whamond scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Will Andrus.
The goal was the first allowed by McDaniel since the 81st minute against Eastern Mennonite on Sept. 11.
The Blue Jays (6-2-2, 2-0-1 CC) took 16 shots in the contest, but the Green Terror defense held them to just four on goal, including only one in the second half. Reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore
Tate Roth, totaled three saves.
McDaniel had a chance to draw level in the 64th minute after a foul in the box gave the team a penalty kick, but the ensuing shot sailed high over the crossbar.
The game was a physical affair as the two teams combined for 25 fouls and six yellow cards.
The last six meetings between the two, and 12 of the last 14, have been decided by just one goal. Nine of those 12 meetings featured a 1-0 final.
The Green Terror wrap up a tough three-game stretch on Saturday when they face their third regionally-ranked opponent in Franklin & Marshall. The Diplomats are also ranked at No. 11 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll. Kickoff from Tylus Field is at 3 p.m.
