WESTMINSTER, Md. – The McDaniel College volleyball team won both of its matches to close out the McDaniel Invitational on Saturday, taking down SUNY Cobleskill in straight sets and outlasting Mount Aloysius in five.
The Green Terror (7-2) swept the Fighting Tigers 25-16, 25-22 and 25-16. Junior
Kailey Young led the team with eight kills before leaving the match with an injury. Graduate student
Nia Roberts and senior
Angalyn Strouse finished with seven and six kills respectively. Freshman
Kaylee Comstock recorded a team-high 19 assists and began the match with three consecutive service aces, finishing the contest with five total.
McDaniel started the first set on an 8-1 run and eventually built the lead to 12-3. Cobleskill (1-8) closed the gap to within five before the Green Terror finished strong, scoring the final three points to take the set.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair with 15 ties and four lead changes. After falling behind 21-20, McDaniel scored five of the final six points to secure the comeback win.
A 6-0 run in the third set erased a two-point deficit and the Green Terror closed strong again to complete the sweep, scoring the match's final five points.
The Green Terror (7-2) survived a five-set match with the Mounties, led by Strouse's season-high 16 kills, one shy of her career high. Roberts and sophomore
Abigayle Bowley controlled the middle, combining for 22 kills and six blocks. Comstock's 36 assists set a new career-high and is the highest single-match total of any McDaniel player this season. Senior
Katherine Taveras added 21 digs to raise her career total to 928.
McDaniel fought back from an early deficit to take the lead in set one, eventually growing the lead to eight before fending off a late Mount Aloysius comeback attempt to win 25-19.
After the Mounties controlled the second set, winning 25-11, the Green Terror shook off a slow start to tie the third, then battled back from a five-point margin to take the set, 25-21.
Mount Aloysius (4-5) returned the favor by erasing its own early deficit in the fourth to tie the match at two, 25-23.
McDaniel started strong in the decisive fifth set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead and holding on to win 15-11.
The Green Terror return to the court on Tuesday when they host York (PA) at the Gill Center. First serve is at 7 p.m.
