WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior
Kailey Young totaled a career-high 22 kills to lead the McDaniel College volleyball team to a sweep over Notre Dame (Md.) Friday in the McDaniel Invitational, 25-23, 25-12, 25-23.
The Green Terror (5-2) have won five of their last six matches, including the last three in-a-row, while extending their win streak against the Gators to six.
Young totaled her first career match with at least 20 kills while posting a .368 hitting percentage. Graduate student
Nia Roberts totaled eight kills and seven digs while sophomore
Hannah Waters had two kills, 19 assists, two service aces and seven digs. Senior
Katherine Taveras totaled seven assists and 12 digs.
Notre Dame (4-4) jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set before extending it to seven, 15-8. McDaniel used a 9-2 run to tie the set at 17-17 before a kill by junior
Kenzie Mitchell and a service ace by freshman
Kaylee Comstock gave the Green Terror their first lead, 22-21. With the Gators leading 23-22, McDaniel scored the final three points, two of which came on Notre Dame attack errors.
With the second set tied at 2-2, the Green Terror scored nine of the next 10 points to take an 11-3 lead, led by four kills from Young and three from Roberts. Holding a 19-12 advantage, McDaniel scored the final six points, including three on Gator attack errors, to take the 13-point victory.
The third set featured 11 ties and six lead changes. Following a kill by sophomore
Renita Bankole-Gibson, the Green Terror held its largest lead, 22-19. However, Notre Dame scored four of the next five points to tie the set for the final time, 23-23, before McDaniel sealed the set and the match with back-to-back kills from Young. Young totaled nine of her 22 kills in the decisive third set while posting a .400 hitting percentage.
Comstock finished with 13 assists, two service aces and five digs while Bankole-Gibson had three kills in four swings for a .750 hitting percentage. She was one of six players with at least three kills for the Green Terror.
McDaniel wraps up the McDaniel Invitational with two matches on Saturday against SUNY Cobleskill at 10 a.m. and Mount Aloysius at 4 p.m.
