McDaniel Picks Up First Win With 3-0 Shutout Over W&J

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College field hockey team took control early and led from start to finish in a 3-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson Sunday at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.

The Green Terror (1-1) held a 23-1 advantage in shots and a 17-2 margin in penalty corners. Their 23 shots were the most since Sept. 2, 2021 when they recorded 29 in a 9-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.) at home.

McDaniel recorded all six shots in the first quarter before senior Tenley Pelot opened the scoring on a penalty stroke with just four seconds remaining. It was the first penalty stroke goal in Pelot's career as she is now 1-for-2. Her last attempt came two years ago to the day on Sept. 1, 2022 in a 4-0 win over Hood at home.

It was the first penalty stroke attempt for the team since Sept. 27, 2023 when senior Tori McArthur scored at home against Washington College.

The Green Terror would add their second goal late in the second quarter as well when freshman Anna Buyse scored her first career goal off an assist from senior Justice Washburn with 1:43 left.

Buyse is the second freshman to score in as many games after freshman Summer Gregory scored in the season opener against Randolph-Macon on Friday. Gregory added her second goal with 8:31 to play in the fourth.

Freshmen have accounted for three of the team's four and six of the team's 10 points through two games this season.

Freshman Teaghen Rieder picked up her first career win and shutout on Sunday as the only shot she faced was blocked by the defense.

The Green Terror begin a two-game road trip on Wednesday when they head to Frederick to face Hood. Game time is at 4 p.m. The Blazers scored the game's lone goal just 50 seconds into overtime to claim a 1-0 victory in Westminster a year ago.
