WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah scored two second-half goals en route to a 3-1 win over the McDaniel College men's soccer team in a weather shortened affair Saturday at Glo Fiber Field at Shentel Stadium.
The Green Terror (0-1), who had won the two previous meetings against the Hornets and were unbeaten in their last two season openers, were out-shot 18-4 and on the short end of an 8-3 margin in corner kicks.
Shenandoah got on the board just seven minutes in when Kyle Welch scored the first of his two goals at 6:21.
McDaniel tied the game three minutes later when the team's two leading scorers from a year ago connected for the team's first goal of the season at 9:51. Sophomore
Charlie Olson scored off an assist from junior
AJ Nordone on the team's lone shot of the half.
Olson and Nordone combined for 22 points in 2023, totaling nine of the team's 19 goals to go along with four assists. Nordone received All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention honors after leading the team with five goals and three assists.
After both teams scored on the first two shots of the game, neither would find the back of the net until the 76th minute when Nick Mattiace scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Hornets.
Welch added his second tally 11 minutes later to give Shenandoah some insurance before the game was called due to weather with 3:36 remaining.
Sophomore
Gianluca Conte finished with five saves, including three ini the second half.
McDaniel makes its home debut on Wednesday, Sept. 4 when it welcomes Wilson to the Soccer Complex for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
