Nia Roberts had seven kills and hit .235 as the McDaniel College volleyball team opened the season with a 26-24, 25-18, 25-12 loss to Penn State Harrisburg Friday inside the Gill Center.
The Green Terror (0-1) committed 47 errors, including 28 attack, 10 reception and seven service as they fell to the Nittany Lions for the first time in five meetings dating back to 2013.
Roberts also added one dig and one block while junior
Kailey Young had six kills and two block assists. Junior
Samantha Fadel totaled 10 digs while senior
Katherine Taveras had nine.
Penn State Harrisburg (1-0) led by as many as eight points in the first set before McDaniel scored 13 of the next 18 points to tie the set at 24-24. However, the Nittany Lions edged out the two-point win following a Green Terror attack error and kill from Camryn Wettstone.
McDaniel trailed by seven in the second set before an 11-5 run pulled the home team within one, 17-16 on block assists by Roberts and senior
Allyson Burgee. The two teams would go back-and-forth before Penn State Harrisburg scored the final four points, all on errors by the Green Terror.
The Nittany Lions scored the first five points of the third set en route to a 15-4 advantage. McDaniel totaled just five kills in the set with nine attack errors and five reception errors. The Green Terror were also just 9-for-14 in side-out opportunities as they trailed by as many as 14. However, 14 different players saw action in the decisive third set for McDaniel, including freshman
Stephanie Buttons who had three digs.
The Green Terror return to action on Tuesday when they host local rival Hood for a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m.
