Macon Scores Three Unanswered to Rally Past Field Hockey

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Randolph-Macon scored three unanswered goals, including two in the third quarter en route to a 3-1 victory over the McDaniel College field hockey team Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

The Green Terror (0-1), who lost for the first time in their last four season openers, fell for the first time in the last four meetings against the Yellow Jackets. The game was also the first in the last four in the series that was decided by more than one goal.

After a scoreless first quarter, McDaniel broke through just 2:13 into the second as freshman Summer Gregory scored her first career goal in first collegiate game off an assist from senior Madge Myers. For Myers, it was her first point in her last 14 games.

The Green Terror maintained their one-goal lead until midway through the third quarter when Llana Thach tied the game on a pass from Courtney Moodie with 8:19 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with just 21 seconds left in the third when Breea Dresler redirected a shot from Janne Roelink following a penalty corner.

McDaniel narrowly missed a chance to tie the game with four minutes to play in the fourth when a shot by senior Tori McArthur deflected off the left post and out with just under three minutes remaining.

Thirty seconds later, Randolph-Macon added an insurance tally when Anna Scheir scored off a feed from Thach.

Freshman Teaghen Rieder had one save in her collegiate debut while McArthur added a defensive save, the first of her career.

The Yellow Jackets held a 9-7 edge in shots while th Green Terror had 9-7 margin in penalty corners.

McDaniel returns to action on Sunday when it welcomes Washington & Jefferson to Kenneth R. Gill Stadium. Game time is at 11:30 a.m.
