Baseball Falls to No. 9 Blue Jays in Conference Tournament

BALTIMORE, Md. - Following a two-hour, 12-minute rain delay, Johns Hopkins scored eight unanswered runs in a 12-4 victory over the McDaniel College baseball team Saturday in the 2024 Centennial Conference Baseball Championship at Babb Field.

As a result of the weather, the third-seeded Green Terror (23-14) will face a rematch with second-seeded Dickinson on Monday in an elimination game. The Red Devils defeated fifth-seeded Haverford in Saturday's first game, 6-5.

Freshman Shea McKenna went 2-for-4 with a walk, home run and two RBIs while senior Tyler Yohn also went 2-for-4 with a walk.

McKenna broke open a scoreless game with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the third to put McDaniel on top before the Blue Jays scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.

However, the Green Terror responded with two more runs in the top of the fourth on a steal of home by sophomore Robert Weer and an RBI-double by sophomore Ben Davis.

With the game tied at 4-4 after the top of the fifth, play was suspended at 3:48 p.m. due to rain. When played resumed at 6 p.m., Shawn Steuerer drove the second pitch after the delay deep to left field for a solo home run. Johns Hopkins added a sacrifice fly and led 6-4 headed to the sixth.

The Blue Jays added four runs the sixth, including three on a home run by Caleb Cyr, and two in the seventh on a two-run double by Dylan Whitney.

Five McDaniel pitchers limited Johns Hopkins to just six hits, but combined to issue 12 walks and two hit-by-pitch.

Meanwhile, three Blue Jay pitchers held the visitors to just three hits over the final 5.1 innings while striking out seven.

Game time for Monday's elimination game between the Green Terror and Red Devils has yet to be determined. McDaniel is 2-1 versus Dickinson this season following Thursday's 5-3 win in the first round of the conference tournament.
