WESTMINSTER, Md. - A five-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from senior
Luke Kelly, led the McDaniel College baseball team to a 12-6 victory over Gettysburg Tuesday at Preston Field.
The Green Terror (14-10, 5-2 CC) have won seven of their last nine overall and six out of nine at home this season.
Kelly drove in three runs, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a double while freshman
Shea McKenna also had three RBIs as he went 2-for-4 with a double.
After the Bullets struck first with an RBI-single in the top of the first, McDaniel scored five runs in the bottom of the inning, three of which were unearned. A sacrifice fly by graduate student
Joey Hubinger scored junior
Shane Daly to tie the game before an RBI-single by McKenna gave the home team the lead for good, 2-1.
A two-out error by Gettysburg (13-15, 2-5 CC) prolonged the inning and led to three more runs, the last two of which came on a two-run double by Kelly.
The Green Terror extended the lead to 7-1 with two runs in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded walk by sophomore
Ben Davis and a ground out by senior
Tyler Yohn.
After eight runs in the first two innings, neither team would score again until the top of the seventh when Jack Pistner hit a two-run homer to right for the Bullets.
However, like the first, McDaniel responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on an RBI-single by Yohn and a bases loaded walk by Kelly.
Trailing 9-3, Gettysburg cut its deficit to three on a three-run home run by Kody Clausius in the top of the eighth.
Once again, the Green Terror answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on a sacrifice fly by Yohn and a two-run double by McKenna.
Yohn finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs while Daly was 2-for-3 with three runs and two stolen bases. Haddock was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs.
Junior
Brady Bailey picked up his second win of the season on the mound, scattering three hits and allowing just one run over 2.0 innings while striking out three. He was one of seven pitchers for the Green Terror, including junior
Conor Henderson who earned his third save of the season.
Sophomore
Tyson Nercessian made his second relief appearance in nine games this season, working a scoreless fourth and fifth inning and striking out three.
The two teams will close out their two-game series on Friday at Gettysburg. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
