WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College men's lacrosse graduate student
Brighton Lorber became the program's career saves leader, but Haverford scored the game's final two goals to escape with a 12-11 victory Saturday at Gill Stadium.
The Green Terror (7-7, 0-6 CC) nearly knocked off a Centennial Conference opponent at home for the second-straight season after a 7-6 loss to No. 18 Muhlenberg on April 8, 2023 in which the Mules scored the game-winning goal with 2:38 remaining.
McDaniel outscored the Fords 9-4 in the second half and held an 11-10 lead with under five minutes remaining.
However, Haverford scored the final two goals just 35 seconds apart, netting the game-winner with 2:30 left.
Trailing by one, the Green Terror were called for an unnecessary roughness penalty with 1:20 to play, forcing them to play a man down and limiting their attempt to tie the game. It was the team's lone penalty of the game.
The Fords (7-6, 3-2 CC) led 8-2 at halftime after taking 26 shots and scoring six second-quarter goals.
McDaniel scored the first four goals of the second half and six of the eight in the third quarter, including two in the final 23 seconds, as it pulled with two, 10-8.
Led by two goals from senior
Nick Wingo and one goal and two assists from freshman
Aidan Skelly, the Green Terror scored three consecutive goals to start the fourth and take an 11-10 advantage. Wingo's goal at 4:43 gave the team its first lead since the 13:02 mark of the first quarter.
Wingo netted his third hat-trick of the season while Skelly finished with two goals and two assists. Junior
Jason Fritz also had two goals and two assists.
Meanwhile, Lorber totaled 11 saves, including seven in the second half, and now has 779 for his career, breaking the previous school record of 775 set by Chuck Nolan from 1980-83.
Lorber also surpassed Dickinson's Adam Norton for second on the Centennial Conference career list for saves. Norton had 774 from 1994-97. The conference record for career saves is held by Haverford's Ian Pitha-Rowe who had 926 from 1996-99.
McDaniel travels to Shenandoah on Wednesday. Face-off is at 7 p.m.
