Kelly Hits Two Grand Slams in 17-4 Win Over New England

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Freshman Patrick Kelly hit two grand slams and totaled eight RBIs as the McDaniel College baseball team posted a 17-4 victory over New England College at the Ripken Experience on Saturday night.

The Green Terror (3-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with their second-straight win over the Pilgrims in South Carolina. In those two meetings on Griffith Field, McDaniel has outscored NEC 40-14 after last year's 23-10 triumph.

Kelly went 2-for-4 with two grand slams, a walk and eight RBIs, the second-most in program history. Jeff Weyer totaled a school-record 10 RBI in a 17-6 win versus Susquehanna in game one of a doubleheader on April 16, 1985.

Kelly has three hits in nine at-bats this season with a three-run home run, two grand slams and 11 RBIs.

The Green Terror got things started early, scoring two runs in the top of the first on back-to-back sacrifice flies by senior Joey Hubinger and sophomore Ben Davis. Hubinger scored freshman Ethan Haddock with an RBI-double in the third before Kelly followed with a two-out grand slam to left center to put the team in front, 7-0.

The Pilgrims (1-4) got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the inning with a two-out, two-run single up the middle by Johnny Cannavo.

Each team added a run in the fourth with McDaniel scoring on its third sacrifice fly, this time from freshman DJ Stolba.

Leading 8-3, the Green Terror doubled their lead with eight runs in the top of the fifth on two RBI-singles by Haddock and freshman Shea McKenna, two bases loaded walks from Stolba and Davis and the second grand slam from Kelly.

McDaniel capped the scoring with an RBI-ground out by sophomore Brady Goyne in the eighth.

Nine players had a hit for the Green Terror, including five with at least two, while 10 reached base. Sophomore Kyle Carl had a career-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with a walk. Hubinger was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two RBIs. Haddock also went 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI, extending his hitting streak to seven games.

On the mound, sophomore Tyler Nercessian went 3.0 innings in his third start, surrendering two runs on four hits while striking out four. Freshman Aiden Castile earned his first career win in relief.

The Green Terror return to action on Sunday against Catholic at Ebbets Field. First pitch is at 12:30 p.m.
