MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Trailing by one in the bottom of the fifth, the McDaniel College baseball team scored seven runs to take the lead for good en route to a 15-7 win over Catholic Sunday at the Ripken Experience.
The Green Terror (4-4) have won back-to-back games, outscoring their opponents, 32-11 while totaling 30 hits, including 12 for extra bases. The team also posted its first win against the Cardinals since 2007.
Junior
Shane Daly went 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and a stolen base while freshman
Ethan Haddock was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk and two RBIs.
Freshman
Shea McKenna and freshman
Patrick Kelly each drove in three RBIs.
After hitting two grand slams on Saturday, Kelly added a double and triple on Sunday. He has boasted a 1.444 slugging percentage over his last two games while totaling 11 RBIs.
For the second-straight game, McDaniel jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on an error and two-run double by McKenna before Haddock followed with an RBI-double in the second to increase the lead to four.
Catholic (5-3) tied the game with four runs in the top of the third before taking the lead on a two-out, RBI-single in the fourth.
Trailing 5-4, the Green Terror sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring seven runs on five hits to surge back in front, 11-5. Four of the five hits went for extra bases as they hit two doubles and two triples.
Sophomore
Ben Davis tied the game with an RBI-triple that scored Haddock before seniorÂ
Jake Smith scored Davis with a single to left to put the team in front to stay. Kelly followed with a two-run triple to right center, Daly laced a two-run double to left center and Haddock hit an RBI-double down the left field line.
McDaniel pushed the lead to 13-5 with two more runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by McKenna and an RBI-double by Kelly.
After the Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the seventh, the Green Terror capped the scoring with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.
Freshman
Jake Young made his third career start on the mound, allowing just one earned run over 2.1 innings while striking out three. Graduate student
Ryan Martino picked up his first win of the season, scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run over 3.1 innings. He also struck out five.
Following an off day on Monday, McDaniel returns to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Dean beginning at 4 p.m.
