Baseball Drops Spring Break Opener at Pelicans Ballpark

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The McDaniel College baseball team totaled 13 hits, but left 13 runners on base in dropping the first game of its spring break trip to Johnson & Wales at Pelicans Ballpark Friday, 7-2.

The Green Terror (2-4) had seven players record at least one hit, but were limited by the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Aidan Vining.

Freshman Ethan Haddock totaled a career-high four hits for McDaniel, extending his hitting streak to six games. He has had at least one hit in every game of his college career so far, leading the team with 13 this season and a .500 batting average.

Freshman Zach Gaeta went 3-for-5 while sophomore Ben Davis was 2-for-5.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Wildcats (5-0) got on the board first on a two-run single by Riley Hasson in the bottom of the third.

The Green Terror would get one back in the top of the fifth when Davis drove in Haddock with an RBI-single to left, but Johnson & Wales would strike back with another two-run single in the sixth. The Wildcats added three more to increase their lead to 7-1 after loading the bases with no outs in the seventh.

Freshman Shea McKenna picked up his team-leading ninth RBI in the eighth when he drove in Gaeta with a one-out, RBI-single to provide the final margin.

On the mound, Vining allowed just one earned run over 8.0 innings while scattering 11 hits and striking out five.

For McDaniel, freshman Dominic DiBlasi suffered his second loss in as many starts, surrendering two runs on four hits while walking two over 3.0 innings. He was one of four pitchers for the Green Terror who allowed seven runs on nine hits with six walks.

McDaniel looks to snap its four-game losing streak on Saturday when it faces New England College beginning at 4 p.m.
