Three-Run Ninth Carries Hobart Past McDaniel in Series Finale

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Hobart scored three runs in the top of the ninth to rally for a 7-5 victory over the McDaniel College baseball team Sunday in the finale of a three-game series at Preston Field.

The Green Terror (7-7) were led by two hits and two RBIs from senior Tyler Yohn. Sophomore Todd Calhoun added two more hits on Sunday and finished the three-game series with a .545 batting average, going 6-for-11 with three runs and two RBIs.

The game featured two ties and three lead changes. The Statesmen (5-6) tied the game at 5-5 on a wild pitch in the ninth before scoring the winning runs on a two-out, two-run single.

Holding a two-run lead, Nicholas Franceschi retired three of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth, stranding a runner in scoring position to secure his second win this season. He recorded the final five outs, holding McDaniel scoreless without a hit.

Hobart scored the game's first run on an RBI-ground out in the fourth before the Green Terror scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including two on bases loaded walks by junior Shane Daly and graduate student Joey Hubinger.

The Statesmen got a run back with an RBI-single in the sixth before retaking the lead on a two-run single in the seventh.

Yohn put McDaniel ahead for the second time with a bases loaded, two-run single in the eighth, but the team left the bases loaded as Franceschi retired the final two batters on an infield fly and ground out to short.

Yohn and Calhoun each finished 2-for-4 with Yohn driving in two runs and Calhoun scoring two. The Green Terror left 12 runners on base, including seven in scoring position.

Freshman Ryan Buecker made his second career start, allowing just one hit over three scoreless innings while striking out three. Freshman Kevin Hyde suffered his first loss, surrendering three runs on one hit over an inning-and-two-thirds.

McDaniel travels to No. 4 Salisbury for a single, nine-inning contest on Wednesday. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
