Calhoun Totals Four Hits as Baseball Splits With Hobart

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Sophomore Todd Calhoun totaled four hits and two RBIs as the McDaniel College baseball team split a doubleheader versus Hobart on Saturday at Preston Field.

The Green Terror (7-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth of game one to break a 3-3 tie en route to a 6-3 victory before the Statesmen scored four runs in the top of the sixth of game two to break a 1-1 tie on their way to a 5-1 win.

Calhoun finished the day 4-for-7 with two RBIs while freshman Shea McKenna was the only other player to get a hit in both games for McDaniel, totaling two with two RBIs.

McDaniel 6, Hobart 3

Calhoun drove in two of the first three runs for the Green Terror who led 3-1 after four. Calhoun had an RBI-single to short in the first to score McKenna before hitting an RBI-single to left to score freshman Patrick Kelly in the third.

Hobart tied the game for the second time with a two-run single in the top of the fifth, but McDaniel quickly answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by McKenna and a two-run double by Kelly down the left field line.

The Green Terror preserved the lead as freshman Ryan Von Stein earned his first career win after allowing just one earned run on two hits in the fifth before junior Conor Henderson earned his third career save and first this season with two scoreless innings in which he allowed just one hit while striking out two.

Graduate student Ryan Martino made his first start of the season, scattering four hits and four walks over 4.0 innings while striking out five.

McKenna went 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Kelly and freshman Zach Gaeta each went 2-for-3.

Hobart 5, McDaniel 1

The Green Terror took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Robert Weer that scored Calhoun before the Statesmen answered with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

Hobart would take its first lead of the day with four runs in the top of the sixth. Two of the runs were unearned as the visitors took advantage of a McDaniel error to surge in front by four.

That proved to be all the visitors would need as Trevor Kimball allowed just one run on five hits while striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work to improve to 2-0 in three starts this season.

Sophomore Tyson Nercessian made his fourth start, surrendering just one earned run on only two hits and striking out four in 4.0 innings of work. Freshman Aiden Castile took the loss with four runs on four hits over an inning-and-a-third.

Sophomore James Cosgrove pitched a scoreless 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits.

Calhoun went 2-for-4 at the plate while McKenna was 1-for-4.

The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is at noon.
