MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Susquehanna scored 12 runs over the first two innings and held of a comeback attempt by the McDaniel College baseball team in a 14-9 victory Wednesday at the Ripken Experience.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Green Terror (6-5) who finished their spring break with four wins in six games.
Graduate student
Joey Hubinger went 2-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs while junior
Shane Daly was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The River Hawks (3-8) drove in two runs in the top of the first on sacrifice flies before scoring 10 runs on eight hits in the second. They drove in four runs on two, two-run doubles, two on wild pitches and a seventh on a bases loaded walk.
Trailing 12-0, McDaniel started to mount a comeback with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, opening the scoring with a bases loaded walk by sophomore
Ben Davis. Hubinger followed with a two-run double before scoring on a fielder's choice by sophomore
Zach Gaeta. Senior
Tyler Yohn then drove in Gaeta with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to seven, 12-5.
Susquehanna got a run back with a solo home run in the sixth before Hubinger hit his second two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Green Terror within six.
With Susquehanna leading 14-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Daly hit a two-out, two-run double to make it 14-9 before Davis walked and Hubinger was hit by pitch to load the bases. However, the River Hawks avoided further damage with a ground out to first base to close out the win.
Sophomore
Robert Weer was 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored with Gaeta adding two hits and one RBI.
The Green Terror used six pitchers in the contest. After allowing 12 runs on 10 hits and four walks in the first two innings, the bullpen surrendered just two runs on four hits and four walks over the final six.
After a cancelation on March 2, McDaniel looks to make its home debut on Saturday when it welcomes Hobart to Preston Field for a doubleheader beginning at noon. Seven of the team's next eight games will be at home.
