HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - Senior
AJ Johnson scored a career-high five goals as the McDaniel College men's lacrosse team scored 20 in a convincing 20-2 road win at Centenary on Tuesday.
The Green Terror (3-0) are off to their best start to a season in 15 years since they also started the season 3-0 in 2009 with home wins over Moravian, Widener and Virginia Wesleyan.
Tuesday marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams as the game was scheduled as a replacement after McDaniel had its season-opener at Neumann canceled due to weather.
Johnson posted his third career hat-trick, scoring five goals on six shots. He was one of 12 different goal scorers for the Green Terror and one of 15 who had at least one point. Senior
Gabe Jensen netted his first career hat-trick with three goals on four shots while senior
Thuan Do scored the first two goals of his career.
Johnson scored all five of his goals in the first quarter as McDaniel led 10-0 after one after out-shooting the Cyclones, 17-5. Junior
Jason Fritz also scored all four of his points in the opening quarter, totaling one goal and three assists.
Fritz scored his lone goal of the game just 11 seconds after Johnson scored on the man-advantage to complete his hat-trick.
The Green Terror scored the game's first 13 goals and led 13-0 at halftime. Graduate student
Brighton Lorber, who was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, made five first-half saves in his 53rd career game and 46th start.
Lorber was one of four goalies used in the contest as sophomore
Seth Hurt and freshmen
Joey Nicholson and
Zach Olvey each saw their first career minutes.
Centenary (0-2) got on the board with 8:18 remaining in the third before McDaniel answered with the final three goals of the third, all of which were the first career tallies for Do, senior
Vincent Lennon and freshman
Charlie Mudd.
Five of the seven second-half goals for the Green Terror were first timers as freshmen
Jake McDaniel and
Brexton Carter each netted the first of their careers in the fourth.
McDaniel won 21-of-26 face-offs led by sophomore
TJ Bunce who won 9-of-12 and picked up six ground balls. Junior
Tyler McDaniel won 8-of-9 and had four ground balls while junior
Justin Long won 4-of-5 with two ground balls.

Jake Arcilesi led the defense with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
McDaniel wraps up its four-game road trip to open the 2024 season on Saturday when they travel to Alvernia. Face-off is at 1 p.m.
