Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Fritz Leads McDaniel to Season-Opening Win at Marymount (VA)

ARLINGTON, Va. - Junior Jason Fritz had a hand in seven of the team's nine goals as the McDaniel College men's lacrosse team opened the 2024 season with a 9-6 victory over Marymount (VA) Wednesday night at Long Bridge Park.

The Green Terror (1-0) picked their fifth win in seven all-time meetings against the Saints and fourth in-a-row. Wednesday marked the first meeting between the two teams since March 1, 2006.

Fritz totaled seven points with five goals and two assists as he totaled at least five or more points for the seventh time in his career and third time in his last four games. He also registered his eighth career hat-trick.

McDaniel jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game's first three minutes and never trailed, scoring all three goals in a span of just 30 seconds. Freshman Aidan Skelly scored the team's goal of the season and the first of his career at 12:36 of the first before freshman Carter Youtz followed with his first career goal off an assist from Fritz just 16 seconds later.

Fritz then netted his first on the man-advantage at 12:06, scoring off a feed from sophomore Will Beacham who recorded the first of his two assists.

Marymount (0-1) scored back-to-back to cut its deficit to one with 13:50 left in the second quarter, but that would be as close as it would get as the Green Terror scored five of the next six goals to take an 8-3 lead early in the fourth. Fritz totaled three goals and one assist during the 5-1 run, including a second man-up goal with 7:03 remaining in the third.

Skelly netted his second off an assist from senior Eric Manfredonia to start the fourth. Manfredonia scored in his first game since March 8, 2023 at Chatham after he missed the final 11 games of 2023 due to injury.

Fritz added his fifth goal of the game midway through the fourth with senior Zach Micklos picking up the assist, becoming the eighth player to record a point for McDaniel.

Graduate student Brighton Lorber made 12 saves to lead the defense while graduate student Nate Capriglione totaled four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore TJ Bunce won 7-of-12 face-offs and picked up five ground balls while junior Tyler McDaniel won 4-of-5 face-offs.

The Green Terror continue their four-game road trip to begin the season on Saturday when they make the short trip to Goucher to take on the Gophers. Face-off is at 1 p.m.
