GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Gettysburg went 18-for-22 from the free throw line in the second half, including 7-for-8 in the last two minutes to hold off the McDaniel College men's basketball team Wednesday night at Bream Gymnasium, 68-64.
The Green Terror (10-14, 5-12 CC) had won two-straight coming in and were looking for their first road win in the series since Jan. 27, 2016.
Senior
Chuck Contee led McDaniel with a season-high 27 points, one shy of his career high set at Washington College on Feb. 7, 2023. He was 10-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-4 from three-point range while adding three steals.
It was Contee's third career 20-point game and second this season. He also had 27 at Johns Hopkins earlier this year on Jan. 25.
Contee scored 17 points in the first half as McDaniel led 36-27 at halftime. The visitors shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including 63.5 percent from three-point range where they were 7-for-11.
However, the Bullets (18-6, 14-3 CC) scored the first 13 points of the second half to take their first lead since the 7:56 mark of the first half.
There would be three ties and five lead changes over the final 15 minutes, the last of which came with 3:46 remaining as a layup by Ryan McKeon gave Gettysburg a 61-60 lead that it would not relinquish.
The Bullets, ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III Region V Regional Rankings, scored seven of the game's final 11 points, all from the free throw line where they went 7-for-8 over the final 2:19.
Gettysburg outscored the Green Terror 42-27 in the second half, shooting 52.4 percent from the floor and scoring 14 points off seven McDaniel turnovers in addition to going 18-of-22 from the free throw line.
Three players accounted for all 27 points for the Green Terror as sophomore
Christian Taylor scored 11, Contee had 10 and sophomore
David Kearney added six.
Taylor finished with 14 points and six rebounds while Kearney had 11 points and five rebounds. Sophomore
Jonas Sujeta, second on the team in scoring and rebounding this season, was limited to just three points and one rebound before fouling out in just 24 minutes of action.
McDaniel wraps up its 2023-24 season at home on Saturday when it hosts Haverford on Senior Day. Tip-off is at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor five individuals, including Contee,
