McDaniel Continues Best Start in 42 Years with 91-Point Effort

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Junior Jonas Sujeta scored a season-high 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting to lead the McDaniel College men's basketball team to a 91-70 win over Regent on Saturday, the team's highest scoring output of the season.

The Green Terror (7-1) earned their seventh win in eight games to start the year, the best start for the program since the 1982-83 season. The team started that season 8-1 and finished with a 15-8 record.

Graduate student Chuck Contee scored 22 points and made 6-of-9 shots from three-point range. Junior Kevin Connelly finished with 14 points and four three-pointers while collecting a season-high 10 rebounds. Senior Lorin Hall scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.

The Royals (1-7) opened the scoring on an and-one from Vladimir Vibert and held the lead for most of the first four minutes. Contee hit back-to-back threes to give McDaniel a 17-13 lead with 13:05 to play in the first half. Regent responded with two threes midway through the half to take a three-point lead, but another and-one from Hall tied the contest at 25-25. The two teams traded threes on their next possessions before a layup from sophomore David Kearney broke the tie with 7:36 on the clock.

Sujeta scored three straight baskets give the Green Terror a slim lead towards the end of the first half. Hall and Sujeta converted on three opportunities in the paint to grow the lead to 42-34 with 2:56 left. Another Connelly three pushed the lead to 10 before Regent closed the gap going into halftime, 49-42.

McDaniel began the second half on a torrid 14-2 run, punctuated by three-pointers from Contee and Sujeta. The Green Terror expanded the lead to 19 on a layup from junior Matt Kearney with 13:15 left in the game. Regent fought back with five quick points to cut the deficit to 13, but McDaniel shut down any attempt at a comeback with three-pointers from Contee and Connelly to grow the lead to 23 with 5:46 on the clock. A free throw by Kearney gave the Green Terror their largest lead at 25, and from there the two teams traded late baskets to cement a 21-point home win for McDaniel.

The Green Terror held a significant rebounding edge, collecting 44 boards compared to only 13 for Regent. McDaniel scored 18 second-chance points and dished 17 assists. The team made a season-high 61.4 percent of its field goal attempts and tied a season-high with 11 made three-pointers.

McDaniel returns to the court in a non-conference road contest at Delaware Valley on Dec. 17 at 7 pm.
