After the Blazers (2-6) scored their first points of the contest, Lenz and Beckett scored again to push the lead to 11. A three-pointer from sophomore
Kennadi Johnson as time expired in the opening quarter gave the Green Terror a 14-point lead.
The 20-point outburst marked the fourth time this season that McDaniel scored 20 or more points in the first quarter.
Hood began to fight back in the second quarter. After the Green Terror built the lead to 16 with 6:04 left, the Blazers ended the half on a 13-0 run, with nine of those points scored by Amari Faust.
Hood cut the deficit to three with 1:07 remaining, making the score 24-21 heading into the break. McDaniel made only 1-of-14 shots from the floor in the quarter, missing all six of its three-point attempts.
The Green Terror rebounded in the third quarter, starting strong again with a 6-0 run capped off by a Beckett three. After both teams traded baskets midway through the period, McDaniel closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 12, 42-30.
The Green Terror dramatically improved from the floor, connecting on 8-of-13 shots in the quarter for a shooting percentage of 61.54.
The Blazers took the momentum back in the fourth, opening the quarter on a 10-2 run. McDaniel again struggled from the field, making just one shot out of 12 attempts. A Blazer layup with 2:40 left made the score 44-40 and after both teams missed three pointers, McConnaha was fouled with 18 seconds left. She made both free throws to give McDaniel a six-point edge.
Hood missed a late three-point attempt in the closing moments to seal a close win at home for the Green Terror.
The contest was a tale of two quarters, as McDaniel shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the first and third quarters while making only seven percent of its shots in the second and fourth quarters.
Despite the shooting struggles, the Green Terror out-rebounded the Blazers, 38-37, and dished out 16 assists, compared to only seven for Hood. McDaniel also won the turnover battle, forcing 19 Blazer turnovers and collecting nine steals.
McDaniel continues a five-day stretch with three games when the Green Terror host the Wilson Phoenix on Monday at 4 pm from the Gill Center.
