ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Thomas Shreiber scored in the 37th minute to lead Muhlenberg to a 1-0 victory over the McDaniel College men's soccer team in the first round of the Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship Wednesday night.
The Green Terror (9-7-2), who were making their first appearance in the conference tournament since 2005, were led by a career-high 10 saves from sophomore
Tate Roth against 19 shots, including 11 on goal.
Schreiber scored his second goal of the season to lead the Mules to their second win against McDaniel in the last four days.
Muhlenberg (11-3-5) held a 9-0 advantage in shots in the first half, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal on its ninth and final shot.
Trailing by one, the Green Terror closed the gap in the second half, totaling seven shots while allowing 10. Roth also totaled seven of his 10 seven saves in the last 45 minutes, including three in the final 8:34.
Following a yellow card against the Mules, McDaniel had one last chance to get the equalizer with a shot and corner kick in the final minute. However, a free kick by sophomore
Parks Tolton was saved by Ben Mulford and the Green Terror could not generate another opportunity off their fourth and final corner kick with 50 seconds remaining.
Despite the loss, McDaniel's season is still alive as it is one of 12 declared teams for the 2024 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship which begins on Saturday, Nov. 16. The team's last appearance in the ECAC tournament came in 2019 when it earned the No. 2 overall seed. That year, McDaniel and New Jersey City battled to a 3-3 tie in the first round, but the Gothic Knights advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 triumph in penalty kicks.
Selections for the 2024 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship will be available on Monday, Nov. 11.
