Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

McDaniel Trounces Eastern, Off to Best Start Since ’15-16

ST. DAVIDS, Pa – Three players scored in double figures to lead the McDaniel College women's basketball team to a 70-47 road win against Eastern on Saturday.

With the win, the Green Terror (5-1) have won five of their first six games for the first time since the 2015-16 season. McDaniel started 7-1 that season and finished with a 21-7 record.

Junior Elaina Beckett led the team in scoring with 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Sophomore Raegan Lenz collected her second double-digit scoring effort of the year with 13 points, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor. Freshman Lauren Cavoli nailed 4-of-6 three-point attempts to secure a career-high 12 points. Sophomore Teya McConnaha hauled in a season-best 13 rebounds and chipped in eight points.

McDaniel opened the contest on a 9-2 run with early baskets from Beckett and Lenz. The Eagles (0-6) closed the gap to five with four minutes left in the first quarter but the Green Terror scored the last six points of the quarter to lead 19-8 after one. McDaniel made nine of 13 field goals in the frame, shooting over 69 percent from the floor.

The Eagles pulled within nine in the second quarter but back-to-back fastbreak layups from Lenz and McConnaha would grow the lead to 13, a lead which McDaniel would take into halftime up 30-17.

Cavoli made three three-pointers in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter, pushing the lead to 22. The Green Terror led by as much as 26 before a 10-0 run by the Eagles trimmed the lead to 51-34 at the end of the third.

Eastern could never get closer than 15 as McDaniel responded to each Eagle challenge. A three-pointer by senior Lil Overcash boosted the Green Terror lead to 23 with 3:45 left in the contest, a lead McDaniel would take to the final buzzer.

The 23-point win gave McDaniel its second consecutive win by at least 20 points. The Green Terror last accomplished this feat in 2018, defeating Bryn Mawr by 35 on Jan. 6 and beating Swarthmore by 20 on Jan. 9.

McDaniel returns to the floor on Dec. 4 when it opens Centennial Conference play at Dickinson. Tip-off is set for 6 pm.
