BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior
David Kearney tied his career-high by scoring 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting to lead the McDaniel College men's basketball team to a 72-64 win on the road against Notre Dame (MD) on Saturday, the team's third victory in five days.
The win gave the Green Terror (5-1) five wins in their first six games for the first time since the 2007-08 season,
Kevin Curley's first season as head coach. McDaniel started 6-0 that season and finished with a 15-11 record.
Junior
Jonas Sujeta scored 19 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the floor. Senior
Lorin Hall recorded his second double-digit scoring effort of the season with 11 points. Freshman
Ashen Stuart scored a career-high 11 points off the bench in 13 minutes of playing time.
The Green Terror jumped out to an early lead but the Gators (1-3) quickly drew even, knotting the score at 15-15 midway through the first half. An 8-0 Gator run made the score 27-19 with over five minutes left. A quick 7-0 run by McDaniel cut the deficit to one before the two teams traded free throws to end the half, with Notre Dame (MD) leading 34-32.
Kearney scored the first eight points of the second half for McDaniel to give the visitors a three-point lead with 16:19 to play. The Gators pulled within two before a 9-0 run by the Green Terror grew the lead to 11. Notre Dame (MD) fought back again, cutting the deficit to four with 4:32 left in the contest. Four straight free throws from Hall gave McDaniel an eight-point cushion, which would ultimately be the final margin of victory.
The Green Terror made 17-of-18 attempts from the free throw line in the second half, including a stretch where they hit 13-of-14 in the final 3:38 and made 11 in a row to seal the win, finishing 23-of-28 from the line for the game. McDaniel made half of its field goal attempts (22-of-44) and out-rebounded the Gators 31 to 22.
McDaniel returns from the Thanksgiving break to host Messiah on Dec. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm from the Gill Center.
