WESTMINSTER, Md. - Natalie Anderson scored her first goal of the season to lead Mary Washington to a 1-0 victory over the 24th-ranked McDaniel College women's soccer team at the Soccer Complex on Wednesday.
The Green Terror (8-2-2) suffered their first loss in the last seven games and first at home in seven games this season.
The loss snapped a 15-game home unbeaten streak for McDaniel, dating back to a 1-0 loss to Randolph-Macon in its home opener a year ago on Sept. 5, 2023. The Green Terror posted a 12-0-3 record during those 15 games.
In the first meeting between the two teams since 2009 and the first in Westminster since 2002, the game was scoreless through the first 45 minutes with each team totaling three shots and the Eagles holding a slim 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior
Lauren Hoolahan totaled three of her four saves in the opening half while her counterpart, Morgan Hicok, had one. The visitors also had a team save on the last shot of the half by sophomore
Alexis Keller-Posen in the 44th minute.
Keller-Posen had the first shot of the second half in the 48th minute that was turned away by Adriana Thompson who entered in relief of Hicok.
After another shot by McDaniel's leading scorer, senior
Madyson Hill, Mary Washington (6-3-3) broke the scoreless tie on its first shot of the half in the 59th minute when Anderson scored in front when she controlled the loose ball following a deflection off a Green Terror player in the box.
Following the junior defender's first career goal in her 46th career game, McDaniel registered three of the final four shots in the last 22 minutes, but the lone shot on goal by freshman
Grace Duffey was turned away by Thompson.
The Green Terror held an 8-5 edge in shots, including a 5-2 margin in the second half.
Wednesday marked the final non-conference contest this season for McDaniel who returns to action next Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Washington College. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
