BALTIMORE, Md. - In a match-up of the top two teams in the Centennial Conference, No. 18 Johns Hopkins scored the game's lone goal in the 55th minute to edge out a 1-0 win over the McDaniel College women's soccer team Wednesday.
The last unbeaten team in the conference this season, the Green Terror (10-3-3, 6-1-2 CC) suffered their first conference loss since a 1-0 loss at Gettysburg on Sept. 20, 2023, snapped a 16-game unbeaten streak.
The two teams have met 14 times since 2015 with 11 decided by just one goal, including each of the last three.
Senior
Lauren Hoolahan tied her season-high with seven saves, equaling the amount she had at Messiah on Sept. 11. She faced 10 shots in the first half, stopping three, before turning away four in the second, including the first two of the second half.
However, Maria Romo-Nichols broke through with her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Megha Salvi in the 55th minute and the Blue Jay defense made it stand, limiting McDaniel to just two shots.
In addition to seven saves from Hoolahan, senior
Jessica Weinoldt, the reigning Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week, also added a team save in the 39th minute. Katie Sullivan bent a corner kick over Hoolahan to the back post where Weinoldt was there to head it away and keep the game scoreless.
With the win, Hopkins (12-2-3, 9-1-0 CC) assured itself the top seed in the 2024 Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Championship. The Green Terror currently sit in second place with 20 points, two points ahead of Franklin & Marshall and three in front of Swarthmore.
McDaniel heads to Muhlenberg on Saturday while F&M hosts Washington College and Swarthmore welcomes Haverford. A win against the Mules secures the No. 2 seed, a first round bye and a home game in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 8 for the Green Terror.
Game time on Saturday is at 3 p.m.
