Bowley Blasts Career-Best 12 Kills in Battle With Muhlenberg

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Sophomore Abigayle Bowley finished with a career-high 12 kills as the McDaniel College volleyball team fell at home in four sets to Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg on Saturday.

The Green Terror (10-9, 0-6 CC) stretched the match to four sets for the eighth time this season. They are 5-3 in those matches.

Bowley bested her previous mark of 11 kills against Brooklyn College earlier this season on Sept. 7.

Junior Angalyn Strouse notched seven kills while senior Allyson Burgee and graduate student Nia Roberts each collected six. Freshman Kaylee Comstock totaled 28 assists, 10 digs and had three service aces, raising her conference-leading total to 56 this season.

Senior Katherine Taveras led the team defensively with 13 digs with freshman Natalia Johnson adding eight.

The Mules (9-11, 3-4 CC) raced out to a 7-2 lead to begin the first set to gain control. They grew the lead to as many as 17 before a late McDaniel rally was stymied in a 25-11 win for the visitors.

The Green Terror opened the scoring with a 3-0 run to start the second before Muhlenberg stole the lead with a 5-0 run. McDaniel responded with four consecutive points and led by as many as eight. Down 22-14, the Mules rattled off six-straight points to draw within two. Both teams traded points down the stretch before the Green Terror evened the match at one on a kill by Comstock to win 25-22.

Set three followed a similar pattern to set two. A 3-0 lead for the Green Terror followed by another 5-0 run for the Mules, topped by another run by McDaniel to retake the lead. Trailing 10-7, Muhlenberg broke out with a 9-1 run to take command. McDaniel fought back to within two before another run by the Mules carried them to a 25-17 win.

Both teams traded blows to begin the fourth. Muhlenberg turned an early 6-5 lead into a 15-7 advantage and eventually led by as many as 10. The Mules scored the final three points to win the set, 25-14, and the match, three sets to one.

McDaniel begins a two-match road trip on Wednesday with a short trip to Baltimore to face No. 3 Johns Hopkins beginning at 7 p.m.
