GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore
Mike Mevo scored his second goal of the season and second game-winner to lift the McDaniel College men's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory over Gettysburg Wednesday at Clark Field.
The win, combined with Swarthmore's 1-0 loss to Muhlenberg, moved the Green Terror (8-5-2, 3-3-1 CC) into sole possession of the sixth and final spot in the 2024 Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship with two games remaining.
McDaniel picked up its third conference win of the season, its most since 2019, and its first win at Gettysburg since Oct. 27, 2012, snapping a five-game losing streak.
In addition, the Green Terror posted their ninth shutout of the season, their most since the team had a school record 13 in 2005.
Mevo, who also scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Washington College on Sept. 28, scored on the team's ninth and final shot of the game in the 77th minute. The goal came off a free kick into the box from the left side by junior
Noah Rodriguez that settled to the feet of Mevo who turned and fired the ball into the right corner.
With the lead, McDaniel faced one corner and four shots in the final seven minutes, but none were on goal as the visitors improved to 3-1-1Â in their last five games with each win coming by shutout.
Overall, the Green Terror faced 13 shots, but held the Bullets (4-5-5, 1-4-2 CC) to just four on goal, all of which were saved by sophomore
Tate Roth, including three in the second half.
Highlighted by a 0.57 goals-against average and .869 save percentage by Roth, the McDaniel defense has allowed just 11 goals in 15 games this season, with just eight in the last 14.
Holding a one-game and three-point lead over Swarthmore in the conference standings, the Green Terror will host the Garnet on Saturday at the Soccer Complex for Senior Day. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
