WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior
Chase Osborn scored his first goal of the season to lead the McDaniel College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Swarthmore Saturday at the Soccer Complex on Senior Day.
With the win, the Green Terror (9-5-2, 4-3-1 CC) secured their first appearance in the Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship since 2005. The team is guaranteed to finish no lower than sixth in the conference standings and the top six teams advanced to the conference tournament which begins on Nov. 5.
McDaniel picked up its 10th shutout of the season, tying the 2004 team for the second-most in program history. The 2005 team holds the record with 13.
The Green Terror, who are unbeaten in six out of eight home games this season, have played well down the stretch this season, improving to 4-1-1 in their last six games with the only loss coming by just one goal to No. 8 Dickinson on Oct. 12.
In an intense contest that featured 23 fouls and four yellow cards, McDaniel scored the game's lone goal in the 24th minute when Osborn scored off an assist from junior
Noah Rodriguez.
After a yellow card against Anzel Zhen, Rodriquez took a free kick from the left of the Garnet goal that was almost like a corner kick. Rodriguez sent the ball towards the far post where the 6-foot, 4-inch Osborn went up and headed it in for his second career goal and first game-winner.
Osborn is the 12th different Green Terror to score a goal this season.
The goal came on the first shot of the game for McDaniel and the defense made it stand, extending their shutout streak to 225:58. Sophomore
Tate Roth finished with seven saves, two shy of his career high.
Roth faced 13 shots in the second half, stopping all five on goal.
With one game remaining on their schedule, the Green Terror could be the fourth, fifth or sixth-seed in the 2024 Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship. Following Muhlenberg's scoreless draw at Washington College Saturday, there is a three-way tie for fourth-place in the conference standings between McDaniel, Muhlenberg and Washington College.
The Green Terror, who own the tiebreaker against Washington College after a 1-0 road win on Sept. 28, travel to Muhlenberg next Saturday, Nov. 2 for a noon kickoff in Allentown, Pa.
