WASHINGTON, D.C. - The McDaniel College volleyball team traveled to the nation's capital for a tri-match hosted by Gallaudet Saturday, winning its opening match in straight sets against Penn College before falling to the hosts in four.
The Green Terror (10-7) were led by graduate student
Nia Roberts and freshman
Stephanie Buttons who each finished with double-digit kills in the victory over the Wildcats. Freshman
Kaylee Comstock added a team-best 12 assists and six aces, maintaining her spot atop the Centennial Conference in service aces.
Roberts combined with junior
Emily Osborne and sophomore
Renita Bankole-Gibson for seven total blocks, the team's fourth-highest block total of the season.
McDaniel jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the first set before a Wildcat rally drew them to within five at 23-18. The Green Terror scored the final two points to win the opening set, securing the victory on a service ace from freshman
Cassy Poteet.
The Green Terror and Wildcats fought to a 6-6 tie to begin set two. Neither squad gained a significant advantage until McDaniel broke away from a one-point lead to score four-straight and increase the margin to 20-15. After trading points through the final moments, the Green Terror scored the last two to win 25-19.
The Wildcats (3-20) started strong in the third set, opening on a 5-2 run before McDaniel quickly snatched it back. After Penn College tied the set at 10-10, the Green Terror rallied for four-straight points and established control from there. Another late run sealed the victory as McDaniel won the match in three with a 25-17 victory.
In the second match of the afternoon, the Green Terror fell in four sets to host Gallaudet. The Bison (23-4) hit .438 and had three players finish with 10 or more kills. Junior
Kailey Young led McDaniel with 12 kills while senior
Katherine Taveras led the way defensively with 13 digs.
After five consecutive road matches, the Green Terror return to the Gill Center on Wednesday to face Centennial Conference rival Gettysburg at 7 p.m.
