WESTMINSTER, Md. - Sophomore
Parks Tolton scored his team-leading fourth goal while senior
Luke Mason added his first as the McDaniel College men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over Stevenson Wednesday at the Soccer Complex.
The Green Terror (7-5-1) posted their eighth shutout in 13 games this season, including their fourth in six at home.
Wednesday marked the first meeting between the two teams since Sept. 3, 2008 and first-ever in Westminster.
The match-up between the two local rivals separated by just 19 miles, was physical, featuring 24 fouls and four yellow cards. The game was also evenly played as the Mustangs held a 12-11 edge in shots and McDaniel earned two of the game's three corner kicks.
The Green Terror scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with just 2:42 remaining in the first half when Tolton scored off a free kick from just outside the top of the box following a yellow card against Stevenson's Jacob Greene.
McDaniel maintained its one-goal lead into the 73rd minute when Mason controlled a loose ball at the top of the box and drove it into the lower right corner to provide some insurance for the Green Terror.
The last quality attempt for the Mustangs (3-7-4) came in the 88th minute on a shot by Ellis Amo-Gottfried that was turned away sophomore
Tate Roth for his third save of the contest, preserving his eighth of the season and eighth shutout.
McDaniel wraps up its four-game home stand on Saturday when it hosts a Centennial Conference contest versus Haverford beginning at noon.
