YORK, Pa. - The McDaniel College volleyball team won a tightly contested first set on the road at York (PA), but were edged in the second en route to a 3-1 loss Wednesday at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
The Green Terror (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season and their first in the last five road matches against the Spartans.
Freshman
Hannah Waters and senior
Tatiana Hamilton led the team with 36 combined assists. Sophomores
Kenzie Mitchell and
Kailey Young finished with double-digit kills while junior
Kathy Taveras anchored the defense with 13 digs.
In the first set, both teams traded points until the Spartans built a 10-5 lead. Young and junior
Ally Burgee helped McDaniel claw its way back into the set with a pair of kills each. After an ace from Waters and a kill from freshman
Abigayle Bowley, the Green Terror were back on top 15-13. Kills from Mitchell and senior
Nia Roberts extend the lead to three, but the Spartans battled back to take a 24-23 lead.
However, McDaniel would not be denied, tying the set on a kill from Bowley before back-to-back aces from Waters sealed the 26-24 win.
The second set began the same way. Neither team could build much of a lead until York moved in front, 11-8. The Green Terror stayed within striking distance and were able to tie the set at 18-18 when Waters found Mitchell for a kill. The Spartans came right back to retake the lead, 23-21, but York was able to pull away and take the second set, 25-23.
McDaniel fell behind early in the final two sets as the Spartans finished off the four-set victory.
The Green Terror make their home debut in the McDaniel Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The team hosts a white out against SUNY Canton on Friday at 7 p.m.
