Mitchell, Fadel Lead McDaniel Past Roos in Home Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College volleyball team battled back from an early deficit in front of a packed crowd to take down SUNY Canton Friday, 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 in its home opener Friday inside the Gill Center.

The Green Terror (3-1) fed off a packed house of fans for a white out to post their third win in four matches this season.

As the first set began, the Roos (1-4) scored the first 10 consecutive points. After a quick timeout, the Green Terror started to claw their way back into the set. Behind the serve of sophomore Samantha Fadel, McDaniel ripped off six-straight points. Both teams traded points for awhile with Canton holding on to the lead. Senior Nia Roberts had two kills to close the gap, but the Roos pulled iin front, 21-15. Fadel went back to serve again, rattling off five aces as the Green Terror took the first set, 25-21.

McDaniel stayed hot heading into the second set. Roberts had two early kills to build the lead before sophomore Kenzie Mitchell got into a rhythm, tallying three of her match-high 15 kills to give the Green Terror a 14-5 advantage. They went on to win the second set, 25-15.

Senior Tatiana Hamilton picked up three of her team-leading 13 assists early in the third as McDaniel built another lead before Canton battled back to take an 11-10 lead. The Green Terror didn't stay down long with two kills from freshman Abigayle Bowley before freshman Abigayle May closed out the match with her first kill in a 25-15 match-clinching victory.

Freshman Hannah Waters added 11 assists and four kills.

McDaniel continues competition in the McDaniel Invitational with two matches on Saturday against Goucher at 10 a.m. and Mount Aloysius at 4 p.m.
